La Panga de San José
Managing partner Jacobo Turquie graduated from the American Culinary Institute in New York; restaurant manager Mario Ramirez hails from México City’s renowned Le Moustache; and Chef Casiano Reyes came from México City to oversee The Restaurant at Las Ventanas al Paraiso, one of the finest hotels in Latin America—their combined talents ensure that the cuisine and service at La Panga de San José is always exceptional. Everything is fresh and expertly prepared. Fresh, farm-raised Oysters on the Half Shell are wonderfully soft and succulent. The Organic Field Greens Salad with grilled shrimp is an excellent small plate, especially at under $100 pesos. The shrimp are plump, both seasoned and cooked to perfection. The Yellow Fin Tartare with black beans and chives is an interesting combination that works well with the Shrimp Soup and prickly pear. The Cured Salmon Salad with bliss potatoes and red onion vinaigrette is yet another wonderful creation. Mario Ramirez and his staff are attentive, impeccably groomed, and very pleasant. La Panga Restaurant is air-conditioned and located at Playa Las Palmas between Sampaguita and the Fiesta Inn in San José del Cabo. Open daily from 5:00 pm to 10:30 pm. Reservations recommended. Telephone: 142-4041.

La Republica Restaurant - This resturant is now closed.
The Colonial-style candlelit courtyard at La Republica has a quiet, mellow atmosphere where music softly plays in the background. Start your evening with a selection from the excellent wine list or sip a delicious margarita. The cuisine is Mexican Nouveau and Chef Angel Mendoza does not disappoint. Little touches, like the corn husk tamale wrappings used as details throughout the meal, are wonderful. For starters, the Black Runner Bean Soup with bacon, chilies, and fresh lime cream is a sophisticated take on a Mexican staple. Salads are delicious and refreshing and the Three Corn Tortilla Soup is hearty and satisfying. The Char-broiled Rack of Lamb in Chipotle Sauce with mint chile honey is only a sample of the many delicious dishes. Chef Mendoza also suggests the Chiles en Nogada or the Filet Mignon. Finish your evening with La Republica’s Coco-nut Flan and an after dinner drink. This hidden upscale restaurant is a real find. Tucked discreetly away on the corner of Morelos and 20 de Noviembre in Cabo San Lucas, La Republica is a bit hard to find but worth it, especially for a wonderfully romantic dinner. Open 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm daily. Reservations are suggested. Telephone: 143-3400.

Las Palmas Restaurant
If you are looking for that perfect spot to have lunch or dinner on the beach, Las Palmas will fill the bill. Las Palmas is one of the finer choices for dining on Playa Médano in Cabo San Lucas. You may either choose to sit on the expansive deck or grab a table on the sand and watch all the people enjoying one of the most happening beaches in Los Cabos. Las Palmas also features Sushi Sato, fully stocked with your fav-orite selections of sushi or sashimi, and if it were any fresher, it would still be swimming. The sea-food dishes are unbelievable and masterfully prepared by Chef Miguel Castro. The wide range of seafood, all prepared in a variety of ways, make Las Palmas a place to visit again and again. Desserts are exceptional here and the Flan is highly recommended. After a moonlight dinner, a romantic walk on the beach will be remembered and treasured. Open daily from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm; Sushi Sato from 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Located on Playa El Médano, next to the Hotel Meliá San Lucas. Telephone: 143-0447.

The Restaurant at Las Ventanas al Paraiso
Extremely private, the exclusive Las Ventanas al Paraiso resort is an intimate and casually opulent respite from the rest of the world. Voted one of the best hotels in the world by Travel and Leisure Magazine, Las Ventanas is nestled between the Meliá Cabo Real and Casa del Mar hotels at the Cabo Real resort. The dining pavilion sits poolside offering easterly views of the ocean and the 15th hole of the Robert Trent Jones II golf course. New York City Chef Mark Liptman creates a daily changing menu combining the freshest local ingredients with the latest tastes from the world of haute cuisine. The dining room is open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. You’ll find that they also have an extensive wine cellar, fine Cuban cigars and a world-class bar. Reservations and resort attire required. Telephone: 144-0320.

Latitude 22+
Latitude 22+ offers a different atmosphere than most restaurants in Los Cabos. When you walk in you will feel like you stepped back in time to the old Baja of Ray Cannon. The walls are covered with pictures and clippings of fishing in Baja California, as well as loads of maritime paraphernalia. Latitude 22+ is not just a bar, although it is great one, it is also a very good restaurant with a full menu of tasty comfort food. Try the excellent Prime Rib and BBQ Ribs. Whether you want a hamburger or a blue-plate special of Meatloaf for lunch, you will appreciate the large portions and quality of the meal. The Ocean Dinners of either shrimp or fish come in a variety of recipes such as Veracruzana, Ranchero or the beer-boiled Peel-and-Eat Shrimp that are absolutely addictive. For those anglers out there who have had a good day on the water, this is a great place to take your catch. Latitude 22+ is also the headquarters of the Pete Lopiccola Charity Fishing Tournament. Located on Lazaro Cardenas near the only stoplight in town. Open 8:00 am to 11:00 pm; closed Tuesday. Telephone: 143-1516.

La Trattoria Italian Restaurant - Cabo San Lucas
Conveniently located at the entrance to Cabo San Lucas in Plaza Bonita Mall, La Trattoria Italian Restaurant is certainly the place to visit for fresh homemade pasta with a traditional Italian flair. Ciro Dimaio came to Los Cabos from Italy over a decade ago, gained valuable experience at several other well known restaurants around town, then opened the doors at La Trattoria. Whether you are craving a healthy portion of Spaghetti and Meatballs, a savory bowl of Lobster Ravioli or a delicious Wood Fired Pizza, you’re sure to hobble out of this restaurant, delightfully satisfied. Meals may be enjoyed inside the unique and rustically decorated restaurant, on the patio next to the wood burning pizza oven, or out on the sidewalk within earshot of the bump and grind of El Squid Roe. Open daily from 9:00 am to midnight. Telephone: 143-0068

Mango Deck
On the beach at Playa El Médano, Cabo San Lucas, this restaurant and beach club next to The Office Restaurant, offers great food and great people watching in one location. Mango Deck is the place to be from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm for it’s multitude of happy hour specials and two-for-one beer specials until 10:00 pm. Rum lovers should try a Mango Rum Deck for a special treat. Mango Deck is a perfect choice for any meal. The lunch menu offers a selection of both Mexican and American food. Every Sunday, an afternoon buffet of fruit, salads, ceviche, hamburgers and prime cuts of beef and chicken off the grill will delight even the most discerning tastes. This popular, local hangout is a perfect setting for a romantic dinner. Try Lobster or Shrimp accompanied by a good selection of Mexican or imported wine; or one of their wonderfully-prepared, traditional Mexican dishes. Open daily from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm. Telephone: 143-0901.

Mare Nostrum at Pueblo Bonito Rosé
Mare Nostrum, in the stunning Pueblo Bonito Rosé resort, is the perfect place for a business lunch or a romantic dinner. With marble floors and crisp white decor coupled with light music playing from overhead speakers, Mare Nostrum is elegant and sophisticated. By day you can dine watching sunbathers beside the pool or gaze out at Cabo San Lucas Bay. Mare Nostrum features International cuisine yet what makes this restaurant special is their theme nights. Almost every night there’s a different theme ranging from a Mexican Fiesta to an Italian Night, with a special Champagne Brunch on Sundays until 1:00 pm. Located on Playa El Médano next to Pueblo Bonito Blanco and Club Cascadas. Open daily 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. Telephone: 143-5500.

Margaritavilla
If you have come to Cabos San Lucas for Mexican flare, you will certainly find it at Margaritavilla. At this expansive restaurant, the decor is decidedly Mexican in hues of earthy pastels. You can enjoy dining in a variety of venues at any time of the day for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Watch the boats cruise in and out of the harbor from the open-air patio, rooftop deck or on the sidewalk along the waterfront. The lunch menu offers traditional Mexican fare of tacos, enchiladas and fajitas, whereas the dinner cuisine consists of a wide variety of fresh seafood and beef dishes. At dinnertime, relax and enjoy your meal while being entertained and serenaded by an authentic Mariachi band that plays on the waterfront. Delight the senses by tasting one of their famous Margaritas—just about any flavor you can imagine is offered! You will find a friendly, attentive staff and a unique atmosphere at Margaritavilla, where you can take pleasure dining in the beautiful ambience of the Cabo San Lucas harbor. Open 7 days a week from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. Located on Boulevard Marina at Plaza Bonita Mall. Telephone: 143-0010.

Mariscos Mocambo
Located in the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas, this hearty, family-style seafood restaurant is perfect for late lunches and lively evening dinners. The large palapa (palm thatch roof) gives you the feeling of being in Veracruz, the Gulf State from where Mocambo draws its name. The menu is full of México’s best-known seafood dishes. Ceviche de Pescado or Cocktail de Camaron are traditional starters. The seafood platters are as enjoyable to look at as they are to eat—filled with all the best the sea has to offer, and plenty of it, too. Pescado a la Veracruzana is a house specialty as well as Oven Baked Fish Filet. The decor is authentic and simple; the waiters are fast, pleasant and friendly. Open daily from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm. Located on the corner of Leona Vicario and 20 de Noviembre. Telephone: 143-6070

Mediterraneo Restaurant
This nautically themed restaurant at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar has two levels with sweeping ocean views and Mediterranean cuisine. The roof of beige, sail-like shapes creates an open-air feeling, while affording protection from the sun and sea mist. Executive Chef Jean Pierre Rivault, formerly of Le Provence and the Westin Regina Los Cabos, has crafted a mouth-watering menu full of the aromas of southern France that will not disappoint those in search of something a little different. For starters, the Shrimp Ravioli with spinach is light and savory. Entrées are a diverse mix. For something different try the Tunisian Fish and Seafood Couscous with mint and lime or choose from their fine selection of seafood and meat entrées including a succulent Rack of Lamb, prepared with herbs, mint and mustard. Fish lovers will not want to miss the Filet de Huachinango (snapper). Mediterraneo has a well-rounded wine list, a first-class bar, and an excellent dessert selection. Resort attire is required and reservations are suggested. Telephone: 145-8000.

Mi Casa
Located across from the main square in Cabo San Lucas and within walking distance from Boulevard Marina, popular Mi Casa Restaurant is known for its traditional Mexican dining experience. Housed in a renovated, colonial-style brick building, Mi Casa provides a true taste of old México. After passing through the bar area, you will enter a lovely terraced courtyard with plenty of refreshing shade. Nights at Mi Casa are magical for both food and romance, with authentic regional cuisine from all over México. Try the Chiles en Nogada, a specialty of the house from the state of Puebla, a Royal Stuffed Pepper with a fresh walnut Nogada cream sauce; or the popular Mole Poblano, roasted chicken in a dark mole sauce of peppers, seeds, chocolate, and spices. If you love fish, do not miss the Pescado Sarandeado, a whole butterflied red snapper grilled over mesquite. The bar has a selection of national as well as imported libations and the Margaritas are as smooth as they come. The service is good and the staff is friendly and very helpful in explaining the numerous menu options. Open from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm for lunch (except Sunday) and every evening from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. Due to its popularity, reservations are a must. Telephone: 143-1933.

If fresh seafood is on your mind, it doesn’t get better than this. Mi Cocina at Casa Natalia
Casa Natalia, the European boutique hotel behind the main square in San José del Cabo is an intimate and sophisticated space with a minimalist, contemporary feel. The open-air interior courtyard is breathtaking, and clearly has been designed with loving care and attention to detail. Colorful, hand-plastered walls in vivid blues, yellows, and terra-cotta offset by hand hewn wood beams, towering palms and dramatic open flame braziers, lend a dramatic air to the dining area. Casa Natalia’s culinary gem is Mi Cocina, a chíc gourmet restaurant featuring Nouvelle Mexican-Euro cuisine. The inspired creations take advantage of the great bounty of the fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, cheeses and spices of México. Popular dishes are the Poblano Chili with Crispy Lamb and Oaxaca Cheese in tomatillo sauce, as well as the Grilled Shrimp del Chef with risotto, roasted tomatoes, and basil. Mi Cocina boasts a fine wine list and an excellent hideaway bar for intimate moments. Casa Natalia brims with the sense of natural class and comfort that San José is becoming known for.
